Mermaid Verse

music flows from lips and as words meet sound bound and found me, your eyes wide open, soul sprightly greeting thee….

Ninigret Beach, Rhode Island

Blue calm, blue sadness

That washed over you and me

When the waves forceful and fierce

Rose and reared

Shower of power over us

Got tossed and turned

On Atlantic shores

And pulled out to sea

In the riptide

Wide was the distance between

When we drifted away

That September day

And when I came to, I looked for you

Out across the tempered ebb and flow

All alone is what I noticed

All alone except for the

Wet soaked sound of water lap

On skin, over head

Golden glow peaked

Behind blue grey show of

Pillowy puffs, thick and cottony

Just about smothering

Warning of

Rain and wind gust

Tempest to bare

In solemn ocean blue

Loneliness drifted in

Taking shape of worn driftwood

And I climbed up on it

Too tired to tread anymore

Finally accepting the dark violet

Stillness from which I came forth

Just me and that wood

Faithful friend

And I would never

Let go.

I promised in the eve

As the waves

tipped and dipped

Deep, and I road those

Peaks and valleys with speed

And intensity

Hold tight

Hold steady

Don’t let go!

Yet, the wave pushed me under

Not knowing how the plunder of water

Sent me tumbling down

Or how I came up

Nor how I was found

Eyes opened, looked around

And I saw it

That golden dream

Smiling, beaming its glow over me

Set against magnificent blue

Majestic, mighty, making me move

Kicking my legs

Shifting my arms

Energy propelling this body

To go on

And with intention and will

I swam due west

Back to the land of us.

With no hurry

No reason to rush

‘Cause now we are quiet

We are calm

We drift silently

Slowly

Into the blue beyond

Where

We are free.” – Megan Marie Seaman
